How would you describe Mira Oliva Høidal with three words?
I would describe myself as shy, kind and adventurous.

When were you first introduced to horses?
My mom rode cross country so I basically grew up with horses from the moment I was born. I even had my first pony at two years old.

Was it an obvious choice for you to focus on show jumping?
As soon as I could start jumping, I was totally hooked. I’ve just been into showjumping ever since, and here I am today, still loving it.

Equestrian-related or not, who or what inspires you?
I am very inspired by Peder Fredricson not just as a rider, but also by the way he treats and trains his horses. I follow him on Instagram and I have seen him with his horses at competitions. I really like how involved he is with them from fixing their feet to training and also how he keeps them out in the field, sometimes even with other horses.

I also want to highlight another rider who I find really inspiring—Laura Kraut.

In addition to your interest in riding, do you have any other hobbies you enjoy pursuing?
I like to read, paint, and draw. Not that I am very talented, but I think it’s fun!

What is your typical day like?
I kick off my day at the stable around 08:00, getting the horses ready by putting on blankets and letting them out. Then I normally start to ride. Sometimes, in between working with the horses, I pitch in with various tasks that may require an extra hand, though the specific duties vary from day to day.

I would say I finish around 17:00, sometimes later. In addition, I also train without horses.  Then I normally eat, sleep and repeat.

What is your long-term goal in equestrian sports?
The long-term goal is to become as good of a rider as possible, capable of handling various types of horses at the highest levels of competition. The greatest dream to achieve would be winning the Olympics 🙈😀

How would you sum up the type of horse you prefer?
I prefer them a bit hot-headed and preferably a mare as well.

How do you prepare yourself for a competition? Can you give us your top tips and advice?

  • I try to only surround myself with good energy and avoid stress the best I can.
  • Sometimes I like to nap to really relax before a big competition.
  • I engage in positive self-talk by acknowledging three positive aspects about myself and my horse.
  • Remembering what Jens Fredricson said keeps me in check: as long as I am having fun and trying my best then it is good enough.

Do you have anything special planned going forward? Something you are particularly excited about?
I have some promising young horses that I hope will step up this year, and I’m very excited about them. This marks my first year as a senior rider, so I’ll need to elevate my game with the older ones. Hopefully, I can participate in some Nations Cup events for seniors.

Which are your favorite MD products?
I love the MD breeches. They are so elastic and comfortable, to the point that you hardly even notice them. In addition, they look really good on you! I also think Maya Delorez has very nice jackets that not only look good but also keep you warm, considering how cold it can get in Norway. The grooming bags are also super handy and cool with the name tags!
