Alise Oken’s Exercise

Cavaletti with Liverpool

This exercise is great, especially for younger horses, to practice acceptance around spooky or new jumps.

Cavaletti with a Liverpool, you say? Yep! Alise Oken likes to do this exercise at home with young horses. If you have a spooky horse, this exercise will hopefully make them a little less so.

This is how you do it

“Set up the cavaletti with a small Liverpool underneath and jump it. This is very useful to incorporate into your daily flat work, especially with younger horses. By doing this exercise, they can get used to different/spooky fences. Using a small cavaletti is helpful because it keeps things relaxed and easy for the horse.

I also like to jump small fillers (that you sometimes see underneath fences) at home. This, too, teaches the horse to stay calm when encountering unusual materials. Then, you are less likely to have a horse surprised or shocked by new materials in the show ring.”
